Polyester window screens have become a popular choice for homeowners and businesses alike due to their durability, affordability, and various functional benefits. One common concern that many people have is whether these screens can effectively block moths. In this blog post, as a supplier of high - quality polyester window screens, I will delve into the science behind it and share some insights to help you make an informed decision.
Understanding Moths' Behavior
To understand whether polyester window screens can block moths, we first need to know a bit about moths' behavior. Moths are attracted to light, especially during the night. They use light sources as a navigational guide. When they encounter a window emitting light from inside a building, they are naturally drawn towards it. Additionally, some moths are attracted to the scents of food, plants, and fabrics.
Moths come in different sizes, but most common household moths have wingspans ranging from about 1 - 2 inches. Their bodies can be slender or more bulky depending on the species. To determine if a polyester window screen can block them, we need to consider the mesh size of the screen and the physical characteristics of the moths.
The Characteristics of Polyester Window Screens
Polyester window screens are made from synthetic polyester fibers. These screens are known for their strength and resistance to wear and tear. They are also less likely to tear compared to other materials like fiberglass.
The mesh size of polyester window screens can vary. Standard window screens often have a mesh size that ranges from 14x14 to 20x20. The numbers represent the number of strands per inch in both the horizontal and vertical directions. A smaller mesh size (higher numbers like 20x20) means smaller holes in the screen.
Now, let's analyze whether polyester window screens can block moths based on their mesh size. Most common moths cannot pass through a standard polyester window screen with a mesh size of 14x14 or smaller. The holes in these screens are simply too small for the moths to squeeze through. Even if a moth tries to force its way through, the strong polyester fibers will prevent it from doing so.

Other Factors to Consider
While the mesh size of the polyester window screen plays a significant role in blocking moths, there are other factors to consider as well.
-
Installation: Proper installation is crucial. If the screen is not installed correctly, there may be gaps around the edges. Moths could find these gaps and enter the building. Make sure to follow the installation instructions carefully or hire a professional installer to ensure a tight fit.
-
Damage: Over time, the screen may get damaged. A small tear or hole can provide an entry point for moths. Regularly inspect your screens for any signs of damage and repair or replace them as needed.
-
Lighting: As mentioned earlier, moths are attracted to light. If you have bright lights near the windows, it may increase the likelihood of moths gathering around the screen. Consider using yellow or amber - colored lights outside the windows, as these are less attractive to moths.

In conclusion, polyester window screens can effectively block moths as long as they have an appropriate mesh size and are installed correctly.
